31 Days of Magic & Mayhem, Kerry Adrienne #HappyHalloween

 Kerry Adrienne

When do you put up Halloween decorations? Any rules in the house?

Midnight, September 1, Andromeda (my youngest) came to me and asked when we could start decorating. This year, with so much going on, we were late getting started and we didn't put everything up. It's still quite Halloweeny--it honestly doesn't take much inside the house since we are kinda Gothic-y anyway. We've never done gory stuff--but it's cool to see all the houses around with different styles. Halloween is the best!

What's your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

I thought I was so clever to dress up as Stephen King's "Carrie" (since I'm "Kerry") when I was 11. It was a cheap costume--basically a "dress" and fake blood. I'd read the book and had seen ads for the movie--but hadn't been allowed to see it. I'm sure my mom was relieved about the cheap costume! The same year, my uncle dressed up as the Wolfman--he glued fur all over his face from some kit. It wouldn't come off and he had bits of brown fuzz on his face for what seemed a long time (probably was only a couple days, lol). He definitely suffered for his art, but I thought it was an awesome costume!

Have you ever had a paranormal/ghostly experience? Can you share a little about what happened?

So many experiences! Once, I was with my family in Charleston and we were asleep in a hotel. I felt a cat jump on the bed (not an unusual experience at home--but we had no cats at the hotel!). I realized there were no cats and I sat up to see what was going on--and at the same time my daughter Ana sat up in the other bed and said something to the effect of "I felt a cat jump up here." She's still a little freaked out about it and it was maybe 10 years ago.

There is also a black cat who roams our house--usually just disappearing around the corner or I'll spot out of the corner of my eye. We've had three black cats since we moved here, but don't have one now. Oddly, I'll see the cat either right before or after we have a cat cross the rainbow bridge. Both Ana and Andi have seen the cat, too. I don't really know if it is the ghost of our first cat here (Neuromancer, who lived to almost 19 and passed while we lived here), or another cat or a representation of all the cats we've loved and lost while living in this house.

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

Echoes of energy.

Midwinter Mage

The Nightshade Guild, Book 12

A serious and visionary talent, Arion has no time for toddlers. But as part of the Nightshade Guild, he won’t refuse the council’s call to protect the orphaned Princess Ameria. As winter solstice approaches, this leather-clad magical musician becomes her twelfth temporary guardian despite the fact that he doesn’t have a full grasp of his own powers or any experience changing diapers.

Protecting a pint-sized princess leaves very little time for promoting his alt-rock music and touring the indie club scene throughout Europe. And it seems the only gift he has for babysitting is entertaining little Ameria with his musical spells and charms. Though it's good fun for her and great practice for him, he's desperate for his month to be over, and none too happy when a groupie named Liv insists she can help. He’s not one to trust, but Liv slides right into his life, almost like she belongs. And that bothers him.

Can they work together to finally end the princess’s long year on the run? Or will December be the month the world loses a kingdom?

31 Days of Magic & Mayhem, Jennifer Wedmore

Otherworld visitor or dream? You decide after reading Jennifer Wedmore’s account.

When do you put up Halloween decorations? Any rules in the house?

I'm ready to do it every day of the year, but hubby refuses to let me do it before Oct 1st.

What's your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

When our kids were young, we would all meet up at our grandmother’s house and go trick or treating. There was four of them all within a year in age. And 8 like adults just walked the neighborhood chatting with everyone.

Have you ever had a paranormal/ghostly experience? Can you share a little about what happened?

I'm not sure honestly! When I was in high school my mom would drop us off at our grandmother’s house (same one we went trick or treating in lol). We used to fall asleep before school, and one morning I fell asleep on the floor in front of the chair my grandfather always sat in. I dreamed he was sitting in the chair, leaning over me. He smiled and said he was proud of me. I honestly to this day am not sure it was a dream.

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

My teenagers sneaking food into their rooms.... That could be my 9 yr old too though lol. I'd like it to be Zombies though. Just ask my twin Sheri Lyn :)

31 Days of Magic & Mayhem, Kat Turner

Kat Turner kicks off the Halloween weekend of 31 Days of Magic & Mayhem!

When do you put up Halloween decorations? Any rules in the house?

October 1st is the official start of spooky season! We're huge Halloween fans, so anything goes, from scary to cute and everything in between. By the time late October rolls around, our place looks like a haunted house.

What's your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

We watch one scary movie or television show episode every day from October 1st to October 31st-Hallo-screen!

Have you ever had a paranormal/ghostly experience? Can you share a little about what happened?

My husband grew up across the street from a cemetery. One night we were walking through the grounds (as one does!) and both witnessed tubes of light slinking around on the grass near a new burial site. They moved slowly and carefully, as if with sentience and intention, making them difficult to explain as ignes fatui.

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

Who can say for certain what lurks behind the veil? I've always felt that some of these mysterious entities are looking out for us. Others, not so much.

31 Days of Magic & Mayhem, Kitchen Witchery with Luna Joya

On the 29th day of Magic & Mayhem, Luna Joya brings a very special guest post on Kitchen Witchery!

 By Luna Joya

When I was little, I learned “tips” from older ladies who looked after me. How to treat with herbs. How to keep spirits out of your mirrors. How to recognize when a rock/crystal calls to you.

It wasn’t until I went to school that I realized not everyone learned kitchen witch tips. Because I was a sensitive kid who responded to different energies, those ladies had been protecting me.

So how about I share one such tip with you?

Let’s discuss my specialty. Negative energies drain you, your space, and whatever else you can think of whether the energy is from a toxic person, inner troubles, or ghosties. I’m a “sweeper” since I grew up being taught to sweep my path clear.

This can also be an excellent way to get your kids to help with housework. Any broom or vacuum will do as Hocus Pocus affirms. Just state your good intention and get to cleaning, visualizing those negative vibes going bye-bye.

Can you use a spell? Absolutely. Does it help? Maybe. It seems to ground me. I’ve used the same since childhood: Find release or be at peace, else be away, you cannot stay.

How to add to the sweeping?

I’m a big believer in salt. Sprinkle salt, let it sit a bit while keeping kids and pets away, then sweep into a pan to dispose of outside your house. Remember the negative goes with the salt. You toss it in the bin in the kitchen, and that’ll just seed the problem.

Can you sprinkle herbs in the salt? Sure. What you add depends on your purpose. I practice adding a tiny pinch of the following for desired effects:

            Oregano—banish chismosa/gossiping/tattletales

            Cinnamon—for prosperity

            Sage—protection

            Cilantro—love

            Rosemary—healing

            Black pepper—motivation

            Lemon rind—cleansing, joy

Remember, different practitioners use different herbs.

While I grew up in the countryside where we grew, foraged, and bartered our herbs, you can do the same in the city. I still grow aloe and other herbs, and I trade frequently with other growers.

The next time you see a witch with her broom this Halloween? Remember, find your calm, keep any snarky comments to yourself, and don’t get swept away.

Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor, healer, or a good housekeeper. Neither do I play one on television. I’m a writer, a storyteller, and tale spinner. So practice at your own risk and as always, with pure intent.

31 Days of Magic & Mayhem, Elle Wren Burke

Love the mood of today’s guest, Elle Wren Burke. Despite writing about paranormal activities, Elle’s not sure how she’d tackle an encounter.

When do you put up Halloween decorations? Any rules in the house?

Close to Halloween! We don't do too much in terms of Halloween decorations. I like to save up all my energy for costumes! Unless we're having a party, then it is game on and I'm pulling out all the stops. Our only rule is that decorations need to be easy to put up, take down, and store (totally lame, I know).

What's your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

I love dressing up! Halloween is a time for us to be free and have fun. We get the opportunity to become someone else, which I love. As a writer, I get to put myself in someone else's shoes all day, but on Halloween I can dress and act like them too ;). My most favorite costume from recent years was Wednesday Addams.

Have you ever had a paranormal/ghostly experience? Can you share a little about what happened?

I haven't! If I ever do, I'll definitely have to integrate it into a book plotline. I'm not sure I could handle it to be honest, I'm pretty jumpy! I love writing about my character's psychic visions, but if I ever had one, I might have a heart attack.

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

Definitely my dog. She gets into some things during her nightly inspection of our house! Other than her, our own minds! I used to imagine so many things happening in my house at night when I was a kid. I was always so scared of something. I still let my imagination run wild every once in awhile!

Just in time, her new Aunt Irene has arrived in Prickly Pear to connect Alara with the biological family she has never known. 31 Days of Magic & Mayhem, ON CHRISTMAS TREE COVE: A BIT OF MAGIC with Sarah Vance-Tompkins #HappyReleaseDay

Happy Release Day Sarah Vance-Tompkins! I'm so very excited to have you as a guest on this magical day! Sarah's giving away an awesome prize, so make sure to scroll down, and comment to enter!

My favorite part about writing this book was building the mystery about a small-town holiday tradition. For as long as Morgan Adair can remember, a lighted Christmas tree has appeared in the harbor of the small town where she lives on Christmas Eve.  The last time anyone remembers the tree appeared was the night her parents died. As she slowly unwraps the mystery behind the floating Christmas tree, Morgan discovers the true meaning of the holiday tradition. What it means to her family and what it means to her future.

On Christmas Tree Cove is a small-town romance about holiday traditions and forever love.

On Christmas Tree Cove

By Sarah Vance-Tompkins

This Christmas calls for a special touch of magic…

December was always a special time for seaplane pilot Morgan Adair, but after losing her parents six years ago, the holiday is a quiet affair. When her siblings announce plans to sell the family home, Morgan longs to experience her favorite, now-forgotten tradition one more time: a lighted tree that, for over a hundred years, has appeared floating on a boat in the harbor every Christmas Eve.

The Taylors were always rivals to the Adairs in the once-thriving fishing village of Christmas Tree Cove, but Jesse Taylor was much more. He wanted to be understanding when Morgan set aside their plans to escape to Chicago in order to hold her family together, but his future as a successful freelance photographer soared on without her.

As Morgan dives deeper into the history of the mysterious holiday appearance, she discovers that true love has always been at the heart of the annual tradition. Can the wonder of Christmas and a few surprises along the way rekindle that love for Morgan and Jesse too?

READ NOW: https://tulepublishing.com/books/on-christmas-tree-cove/

Giveaway: Sarah's giving away a generous Christmas Tree Cove tote and a $25 Amazon gift card to one commenter. The winner will be selected at random on Friday, Oct. 29, after 5 p.m.

Tell us: What is one of your holiday traditions (it can be ANY holiday!). Leave a way to contact you if you're the winner.

31 Days of Magic & Mayhem, Sascha Illyvich

Don’t let the naughty exterior of this Bad Boy of Romance fool you, he’s very sweet at heart. Please welcome Sascha Illyvich. His "encounter" stories will leave you with all sorts of chills.

When do you put up Halloween decorations? Any rules in the house?

We don’t. I have enough goth in my wardrobe as it is!

What's your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

Probably the two years I spent with an ex in NOLA. Those were wild times down on Bourbon Street after we'd had an exquisite meal at Emeril's Delmonico's (yes, THAT Emeril, BAM!) and found our way through the throng of people celebrating and jamming and hanging out. Very wild times indeed!

Have you ever had a paranormal/ghostly experience? Can you share a little about what happened?

Pick one…the one that comes to mind had me on the phone late one night with Lover Mine and we'd said goodnight but I have a habit of being the last to hang up...sort of an "I'm making sure you're okay" thing I suppose. I hung on the line but never heard her phone 'click' off. A moment later, I heard a static-like noise and some odd preaching about Jesus and God...and while Lover Mine was Catholic raised, that wasn't quite the thing for her.

Kerry Adrienne's friend made me a pair of paracord bracelets and I said upon their receipt that I'd give one to Lover Mine. Even after her death, I kept wearing them. One night I went to the cigar club with them both on. Had them both when I left. I walked back to the train station and when I got off the train and began walking down the path to the complex, I realized the one on what would be 'her' wrist had disappeared. These are click-lock bracelets. I'd have heard one hit the ground., I swear. All I can figure is she took her one back. I know...I know...could have simply come off but all sorts of weird shit like this happens to me too much for it to be 'just that simple...'

Oh, and often I see things out of the corner of my eye that...aren't there. Lights will be on and then 'dim' or 'brighten' and I don't have dimmer switches.

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

Spend the night with me...

Editor's Note: See what I mean by naughty!?

31 Days of Magic & Mayhem, Cynthia Diamond

For the first time in the 31 Days of Magic & Mayhem, Cynthia Diamond's recounting totally freaked me out! Beware ...

When do you put up Halloween decorations? Any rules in the house?

As soon as I can! But if I have any restraint, I will wait until October the 1st. If i wait for later I feel like a slacker.

What's your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

Oh so many. Over the years, my traditions have changed from parties, to costumes, to decorations. My current favorite is me, my husband, and friends when they are about, all carve pumpkins on either Halloween eve or Halloween. Halloween night we light their candles, make wishes, and let them burn until dawn then they finally go out.

Have you ever had a paranormal/ghostly experience? Can you share a little about what happened?

One time, when I was still living in the Bay Area, my friend and I were driving along a stormy dark road. While we were going along, there was a tall shadowy figure standing along the side of the road. The trees around him were blowing but the wind didn't touch him. As we were driving by, he watched our car pass. We tried to make out his face but saw nothing under the brim of his hat. I remember the chills we both felt as we sped off as fast as we could.

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

...it’s my cats. It’s ALWAYS my cats. *Sigh*

An Impractical Guide to Satyr Charming

With her magic stolen, Ivy Bennett is a witch doomed to die. But she isn’t giving up without a fight. One ritual could restore her power, all she needs is a little elbow grease and an abandoned house in the woods. Unfortunately, the home’s current resident -an arrogant satyr named Finn- will not tolerate a witch in his territory. Ivy will be damned if the goat-legged jerk gets in her way. If only he wasn’t as sexy as he is infuriating. Charming a satyr isn't at the top of Ivy's do-to-list, but it's either come to a truce with the insufferable male or knock on death’s door.

After witnessing the slaughter of his herd, Finn’s sole purpose is to protect his brother and his lands from deadly witches. But when one moves in, his fury rises. While the need to drive the witch away is strong, his desire for her is stronger. Soon he finds himself wanting the lovely, stubborn female more than hating her. But keeping Ivy as his own would forfeit everything he’s held sacred. And now her presence has attracted something in the forest... Something that may destroy them all.

A HAUNTED HOUSE TO DIE FOR

Bookish, broken yet beautiful, Amelia Craven is trapped. Trapped by controlling best friend Tiffany, trapped dating shallow guys, and trapped into joining Amteep university’s only sorority, the Omega Pis. But things go from bad to worse when she discovers the final initiation for pledges involves spending Halloween night inside the infamous Raimi House – a dark hell hole of macabre deaths and tales of demonic possession.

The only saving grace: she’ll get to share it with her secret crush, Guillermo Romero, and being there together is the only way she'll tell him how she truly feels. That is if they can survive the night inside the most haunted house in town.

A love-song homage to Eighties classic horror films, this rollercoaster ride is filled with scares, guts and gore – plus a true romance that might be the one thing that will be their salvation.

31 Days of Magic & Mayhem, Mia Downing

Today’s 31 Days of Magic & Mayhem brings author Mia Downing. You wouldn’t be afraid of an everyday ghost named Michael, would you? A person you met once in real life, and came for a visit in the afterlife?

When do you put up Halloween decorations? Any rules in the house?

We're not hardcore Halloween fans (except DD.) She has spooky things all year long. We did grow a white pumpkin by accident from a pumpkin we chucked in the garden last year, so he's on the porch!

What's your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

When the kids were little, DH would carve a pumpkin and put it on a very tall stump. For Halloween, we'd light it or put those battery candles in it.

Have you ever had a paranormal/ghostly experience? Can you share a little about what happened?

Yes! The farm I lived at before I got married had a resident ghost named Michael. One of the tenants had committed suicide on the property a few years before. He'd do pranks like take things you needed and hide them, or he'd make messes. You could sometimes hear him walking in the hayloft or down an aisle, but you'd look, and no one would be there. It was creepy. I had met him once when he was alive (in passing, a quick thing.) But when I saw him once as a ghost, I knew it was him. I described him after down to the limp on the correct side. That wasn't something I'd known about him since he'd injured himself after the timeframe when I'd met him. It was incredibly weird, and I have a shiver just thinking about him!

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

Energy that's trapped here on Earth. Sometimes, it's my husband trying to find the bathroom at night.

Chasing Time

Mia Downing

Skye Worthington’s quest for family brings more than she bargained for…

My already turbulent life flips upside down the moment Marek Young appears. Nightmares from a childhood jumping between foster homes edge into sexy dreams of a man in leather pants with a simmering magical touch. As Marek is an important client at the bookstore where I work, I can’t say no when he asks me to dinner. I didn’t expect the pull of desire or the sizzle of familiar energy the first time we touched, but I need more than satisfaction. I need the truth. Yet the truth he offers seems too bizarre to believe…

One fated jump through time destroyed Marek Young’s life…

I have only one mission—make Skye love me again. Except the aloof bookstore clerk and grad student has no recollection of me. An emergency jump through time left Skye to grow up in this era with no memory of our adventures...or me. Unfortunately, she’s always had a temper, and my time is running out. All I want is to be the man she can fall in love with again.

Chasing Time is the first book in the exciting Bonded Souls series by Mia Downing. If you like angsty, second chance romance with a touch of magic and adventure, then this is the book for you! Jump into this magical new world today!
