"Sweet Dreams" -- Stream of Consciousness

Delving into Stream of Consciousness

 

Did that happen? Chapter Six, “Sweet Dreams” takes readers on a wild ride of the unconscious dreams of the characters of “Time After Time.”

 

As a writer, I’m used to making transitions so much smoother, and while I reflected over this chapter – a lot – it’s still choppy. Peder is deteriorating physically and has been thrown into high-stakes situations continuously. While he has paranormal abilities, he’s not a Mage with The Nightshade Guild. The reader sees this unraveling, but the dreams … showcases it.

 

Peder’s experiences contrast directly with those of Serena. Without dishing spoilers for the reader, her dreams take on another aspect and delve more into the realm of astral projection and divination. 

From LitCharts, a definition of stream of consciousness is: “Stream of consciousness is a style or technique of writing that tries to capture the natural flow of a character's extended thought process, often by incorporating sensory impressions, incomplete ideas, unusual syntax, and rough grammar.”

 

At the end of the chapter, the reader questions WTH happened, and how the information should be interpreted. For Peder, there is an irony in his dreams. Can the chaos truly be described as sweet? We are left longing for more … or less.

 

Readers will either embrace it or reject it. While I primarily read and write romance, my background is heavily influenced with the master’s in English. The classics, literature and poetry and related influences sometimes bleed through.

Would the temperature in the house drop 30 degrees without anyone touching the thermostat? What makes a child's toy "talk" without anyone pressing the button? Things like that make Louisa Bacio question what goes bump in the night.

 When do you put up Halloween decorations? Any rules in the house?

 

We always keep a few spooky decorations up. We have an inflatable Jack Skellington that’s like 10 feet tall that only goes up outside on Halloween. This year we bought an Oogie Boogie that’ll join him, but he’s under four feet tall. 

 

What's your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

 

Mine are split. Growing up, I loved going out with my cousins when I was little. As I got older, one Halloween my high school friends and I dressed as Gem and the Holograms. We each did our hair a different color and carried the doll (borrowed from my younger cousins).

 

As a mom, it’s spreading that joy to my family, and we go to the special event at Disneyland. It’s one place where you get to dress up, collect candy (or other snacks) at “treat stations” and not be judged! Watch out for those leftover apple slices at the bottom of the trick-or-treat bag!

 

Have you ever had a paranormal/ghostly experience? Can you share a little about what happened?

 

I feel or sense more than I see ghosts. A few days after my Papa (grandfather) died, I had a complete conversation with a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers toy. He lived five houses away from us, and my youngest was only a few months old. The toy was battery-operated and started going off. I asked it questions, and it responded. Right when I said, “This is ridiculous. I’m just talking to a doll. It’s not you,” the clock on the cable box reset … numbers scrolling to 0000 until it blinked back to normal. Coincidence or supernatural?

 

Stuff like that happens all the time. 

 

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

 

What have I been reading? Seriously, I believe in the power of fiction and nonfiction. I was a teenager when I first read Anne Rice’s “Interview with a Vampire,” and I swore that if I looked out my second story window at night, a vampire would be hovering there.

When do you put up Halloween decorations? Any rules in the house?

 

I have some stuff that stays up all year, but the rest go up as early as I can. I usually end up buying more as soon as it appears on the store shelves and that gets put put as soon as I get home.

 

What’s your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

 

The whole family always met at my grandmother's house and we trick or treated together as a group. It was pretty special. And we'll there was this one time when my twin and I went as a two headed monster. We went up to this house and they jumped out at us. We were in one costume and tried to run two different directions. 

 

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

 

Humans for sure ;) other than that I'm not sure, but I’m open to the possibilities.

September 1st begins the Halloween season and it ends when I take it down and put up Christmas decorations. I LOVE HALLOWEEN!!

 

What's your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

 

My favorite Halloween decorations are my Halloween houses/village. They're like Christmas houses, but Halloween instead. One of my favorite Halloween's was when I went to my best friend's house for a Halloween party. We all dressed up and had a scavenger hunt. I had the best time every! 

 

Have you ever had a paranormal/ghostly experience? Can you share a little about what happened?

 

I've had several. I'm a ghost magnet. My first incident with one was when I was 13 years old. I came home with my step-mom to my dad's house one evening and I could see a man standing toward the back of the house hiding behind the bushes. All I could see was his white T-shirt and it looked like he was squatting to hide from us. Each week when we came home, the white T-shirt guy was there and he came closer to us each time, until he was standing at the bottom of the stairs as my step-mom unlocked the front door. I said, "Debbie, there's someone standing there." She turned around and said, "There's no one there." I later discovered that my great-grandfather died in the house and this was the first of many experiences I've had during my life.

 

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

Our imagination mostly. lol I believe in ghosts but in my experience, they can show themselves in daylight also.

What's your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

 

My grandmother has lived in the same house since 1960. We trick or treated there when we were kids, and all of our kids did too. I hope their kids will too.

 

Have you ever had a paranormal/ghostly experience? Can you share a little about what happened?

 

When I was young we often thought my bedroom was haunted. I would ball my bed sheet up in the center of the bed then we'd watch it move across the bed and off. My family witnessed it as well so I knew I wasn't crazy :)

 

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

 

Absolutely everything we can imagine bumping in the night most definitely does. I am not embarrassed to admit I'm afraid of the dark! You could not pay me to open the blinds at night and look outside.
