Songs of the Deep: Silver Seas

Louisa Bacio

Silver Seas

Lumina admits to making mistakes in life and love. When her scumbag ex dumps her—literally—overboard in the middle of the ocean, she figures she’s done.

Until she’s saved not once, but twice.

Change and trust doesn’t come easy for Jewel. She’s learned to rely on herself until she hears the cries for help from her intended mate.

With more than a little help from Poseidon and the magic of the sea, these two forge a new life, together.

Share something special about the characters in your story:

Despite both living a hard life, both find salvation and love in the mystical waters of the sea and each other.

What drew you to be part of this anthology?

It’s a wonderful group of contributors, working together to create something new. It’s always good to work with people you respect such as my long-time writing bestie Nikki Prince, and Lexi Ostrow. Plus, it helps amplify new voices.

Plus, I’ve always been drawn to the sea.

Are mermaids/sirens real? What do you think about those things we know to be true but don't necessarily see?

My mom absolutely swears to this day that she’s seen a mermaid, and my dad met a vampire. Imagine growing up with those stories! Just because we don’t see something every day doesn’t mean it’s not “real.”

Anything else you’d like to add?

While the worlds are not all interconnected, Silver Seas is my fourth romance featuring romance. You can download a free read via BookFunnel.

Wet: A Ménage Mermaid Tale (FFM)

Princess & the Pauper, Under the Sea.

After the Sea Queen forbids the Princess to follow her heart, Marianna swears to catch Shell, the feisty water sprite.

Songs of the Deep: In Too Deep

Nikki Prince

In Too Deep

The sins of the father will be visited on the daughter.

Intent on revenge, Oceanu targets her prey, leaving them enthralled with her siren song.

Until she sees Scott and became bewitched herself. Would he still yearn for her if he knew the monster she held back beneath her skin?

Only time and the seas would tell.

Share something special about the characters in your story:

Oceanu was innocent until fate made her not so.

What drew you to be part of this anthology?

I wanted to represent POC in a fantasy world under the sea. I also wanted to try my hand at a dark romance. This one is definitely darker than I've ever done. I'm hoping the readers will love Oceanu as much as I do.

Are mermaids/sirens real? What do you think about those things we know to be true but don't necessarily see?

I believe there are a lot of things that aren't explainable but could be true. I'm not sure about mermaids or sirens...but this is the beauty of stories...anything can be real.

Songs of the Deep: Poseidon's Voice

Catherine Stovall

Poseidon's Voice

A mermaid who is still healing from her tragic human death, a prince running from responsibility, a ship's captain who has gone mad, and a monster in the deep. When the war between mermaids and men spills from sea to land, no one is safe. But if they die, they die together.

Share something special about the characters in your story:

While Nadia and Dante are the main characters of the book, it is truly Captain Manford (Dead Eye) Roberts who captures my own imagination. I feel as if his story would be interesting to tell.

What drew you to be part of this anthology?

I was excited to write about mermaids for the first time and the opportunity to work with some really amazing authors. Some for the first time and others who I have written with before.

Are mermaids/sirens real? What do you think about those things we know to be true but don't  necessarily see?

I believe nothing is impossible. Mermaids might just exist. We can't possible guess what is hidden beneath the waters.

Anything else you would like to add?

I always like to thank the readers. Without the people who buy and read the books, I am nothing. It is their minds and hearts that breathe life into the characters again and again to truly give them immortality.

Songs of the Deep: Cut the Line

A.L. Davroe

Cut The Line

Cut the line and swim free.

Share something special about the characters in your story:

This is a dark tale about a merman, who is trying to come to terms with letting go of his humanity, and the human woman who unwittingly helps him let go.

What drew you to be part of this anthology?

I liked that it wasn't your typical happily ever after, that these were *potentially* dark characters who were revenge driven.

Are mermaids/sirens real? What do you think about those things we know to be true but don't  necessarily see?

The logical part of me says no, but there's definitely that part of me that WANTS them to be real--along with all the other things that go bump in the night. I suppose they could be, the depths of the oceans are still vastly undiscovered and if they're highly intelligent then it would be easy for them to hide.

Songs of the Deep: Ivory Cove

Jori Elizabeth

Ivory Cove

Hawker's frustrated with where life has taken him. He decides a stay at the family's summer camp on Ivory Cove is the perfect getaway. Ivory Cove was once terrorized by a mermaid, and now Hawker's discovering there is more to the story - and she's back for revenge.

Share something special about the characters in your story:

Hawker's ancestors were well aware of the mermaid who terrorized Ivory Cove in the past. What other secrets does his family hide?

What drew you to be part of this anthology?

Mermaid lore fascinates me. Everyone thinks mermaids are so sweet. The lore tells another story.

Are mermaids/sirens real? What do you think about those things we know to be true but don't necessarily see?

Yes! I don't think they look exactly as depicted in stories and art, but there is something hiding in the deep.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Murder awaits when you dive in.

Book Tour: Swagger with Nikki Prince @AuthorNPrince

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

I am a single mother of two teens, one 16 and the other 18 (where did the time go).  I’m a gamer (I play The Sims, World of Warcraft, and Call of Duty along with mobile games).  I also make homemade soaps.  I always wanted to be an author since I was about 11 and I read my first romance book and decided from that point on that I was going to write stories.  At 43 (2012) I published two books with two different publishers and I haven’t stopped since.

Where were you born/grew up at?

I was born in California in Merced (Central California), however my parents were both in the Air Force.  So I have lived in California, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Philippines as a child.

How to find time to write as a parent?

I write whenever and wherever I can.  Once my kids were able to more or less take care of themselves (such as play on their own, watch TV etc) it became easier to write all the time without interruptions.  They learned pretty quickly that mama was writing when she was at the laptop and unless something was wrong to go ahead and play.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

At the age of 11 when I wrote my first poems and began writing my first stories.

What inspired you to write this book?

My parents having been in the US Military and knowing that they struggled with PTSD.  I wanted to honor them, to show the struggles that our military faces and yet even through the struggles show how strong they can be and that love finds a way to start healing.

Do you have any “side stories” about the characters?

There is a second book in the series called Finesse and Cruz and Roxy from Swagger show up in there.  I will be also doing a third story with a character from both stories finding her happy ever after.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?

For Swagger I was just thinking about how much my mom alone had to deal with while she was in the military.  My father was medically retired, however he’d served in the Vietnam War and my mother did 20 plus years. Both are heroes to me as are all those who serve even if it is only four years.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

It was my first book that I wrote in first person. I’d tried to write it in third person but it wouldn’t come out right and I remember I was writing it for NaNoWrimo that year (National Novel Writing Month) and once I figured out it had to be in first person it was an ease to write.  As it allowed me to write both POV’s.

How did you come up with the title of the book?

I loved the way Cruz Montoya had this persona of being confident, and perhaps arrogant (arrogant if only a little) and yet at the same time this loving and caring guy who just wanted to be happy with the girl he’d loved since he was a teen.

Who designed your book covers?

Swagger was designed by the wonderful and talented Rue Volley.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

I believe that some of my characters have hijacked the story but I love that. I am all about no rules in writing, write the story of your heart.  Having your characters speak to you is a beautiful thing.

Is there an writer which brain you would love to pick for advice? Who would that be and why?

For me the best thing to ever happen was getting to meet Carole Mortimer and talk with her about why I loved her writing style and why her books spoke to me as a kid. She’s a wonderful person and we email each other from time to time.

What are your top 10 favorite books/authors?

Wow this is a really hard one.  I hated to read as a kid until I found the books that spoke to me, which were mainly anything that had rhyming (rhythmic verbiage or romance).  So some of the authors and books I will list since I started read at age 11.  Here are my favorite books:

  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
  • Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret by Judy Blume
  • Wifey by Judy Blume (yeah started early)
  • Gabrielle by Theresa Conway
  • Sea Fire by Karen Robards
  • Skye O’Malley by Bertrice Small
  • Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
  • Love Cherish, Me by Rebecca Brandewyne
  • Only Lover by Carole Mortimer
  • Living Together by Carole Mortimer.

Pen or type writer or computer?

I have to admit though I love pens and paper, I’m much faster at getting my stories written on the laptop.  I’m so used to using tech that now when I write for long periods of time my writing looks like chicken scratch and my hands get really sore.  So only thing I write by hand is if I have an idea that I need to get down really quickly.

Do you have any advice to offer for new authors?

Stay true to yourself.  However learn to deal with criticism because there will always be someone who just doesn’t get your story.  Keep writing and always help other (authors) there is enough pie slices to go around.

Radioactive Tales of Love Book 1

by Nikki Prince

Genre: New Adult Interracial Military Romance

Nine years, two lives, one love.

We all have dreams. Mine were filled with college and the boy I loved, Cruz Montoya. But all that went up in smoke when he got sent to juvenile hall, my sister killed herself, and Dad up and left. My mother, and I use that term loosely, became a monster, transferring her pains and disappointment. I became trapped.

Honorably discharged, I'm back in Arlington Heights, the small town that only remembers the black sheep persona of my youth. I could list a dozen reasons for my return, but the only one that matters is Roxanne Waters. I should probably leave her be. I'm not much of a catch with PTSD and the childhood memories rattling around in my brain. Yet, I can't walk away. There's a darkness that surrounds the death of her sister, a secret that's slowly killing her. I'm going to find out everything. This is the moment of truth to see if we can make it or if I'm nine years too late.

Finesse

Radioactive Tales of Love Book 2

Indelible scars and memories chase us like ghosts.
He was supposed to be coming home. But not like this, never like this. I'd always dreamed that one day Quinton Grayson would be mine. Now he's back and we're both dealing with paralyzing guilt. Does wanting him make sense when I have the responsibility to take care of my nephew? Quinton is holding back; dare I find out why?

When you're on the sand, you're supposed to leave everything there. Unfortunately, I've brought it back to Arlington Heights and Lyric Scott's doorstep. My body reveals all the scars for everyone to see, but the ones on my soul are graver. Will she even look my way? What can I possibly offer her other than to keep the promise I made to her brother, my best friend who I couldn't bring back?
We're a ready-made family now, how can I walk away? But how can I allow her to deal with the demons at my door?

31 Days of Magic & Mayhem, Nikki Prince

Nikki Prince stayed the night at my house once. She was sleeping in the living room and in the middle of the night heard footsteps. Then, the front door opened and slammed shut! It actually was another friend leaving early the next morning. But for those few moments … she was terrified. (Yes, I’m laughing as I write this recounting.)

When do you put up Halloween decorations? Any rules in the house?

End of September (no rules).

What's your favorite Halloween tradition/decoration/memory?

Watching Nightmare Before Christmas with my kids

Have you ever had a paranormal/ghostly experience? Can you share a little about what happened?

Yes, though some call it night terrors. I had it happen twice in the early nineties. I was awake in bed and suddenly the covers tightened and I couldn't get up nor lift my head. I felt a bad presence and I had to pray my way through it.

What do you think goes *bump* in the night?

I really believe they do.

It’s not my fault, or maybe it is.

Tips for staying up late!

I’ve been blamed for a lot of late nights and lack of sleep. They’re not all related to people staying up past bedtime reading my books either. Oh, years ago best-selling NA author Brenna Aubrey mentioned how I had her up reading one of my Vampire, Witch & Werewolf books, but for the most part, I’m talking about getting stuff done.

When Sabrina Sol, a friend from college, asked if I had advice on writing with a busy schedule of a family, working and volunteering, I offered one thing: You’re going to get less sleep. Most of my work happens after the family goes to bed.

Recently, I got the funniest message from a friend who had to forgo sleep in order to solve a technical problem:

“Late last night started thinking, if Louisa can stay up this late, so can I.” – Linda Borders Killian. (Used with permission)

5 Tips for Staying Up Late

1) Plan ahead. Yes, it may seem like cheating, but seriously if you know you’re going to be burning the midnight oil sneak in a catnap. It’s amazing what a solid 20 minutes can do for you. Saranna DeWylde and Dorothy F. Shaw swear by them. Real adults are not afraid to admit they nap!

2) What are your goals? I find it’s easier to do with lack of sleep for short bursts of time, like if I’m on deadline. OCC/RWA President Nikki Prince balances an amazing amount of obligations, including a master’s degree program. You know what, though? It’s not forever. And that’s what I tell myself. Once I finish this book … well, another deadline will soon follow, but sometimes *shhh* I also lie to myself.

3) Don’t stay stationary. If I’m doing late-night writing, I need to get up and move around every half hour to forty minutes. Once the sleepies kick in, if I wash my face and take out my contacts, I’ll get refreshed for one more sprint.

4) Get a support group. If you know others are foregoing rest to get ’er done at the same time, it builds incentive to stay up late. For those who write at night, we’ve got Night Writers. (Watch out for the likes of Sascha Illyvich who has a big – supportive – bark, and Sidda Lee Rain, who’ll outpace you.) Then there are those other people in the world like Laura Drake, who get up SUPER early to do the work.

5) Caffeine. Did you think I was going to forget the magical elixir? (For some, ahem Christine Ashworth, it may be a glass of wine). Those days I run out of Red Bull, oh my. It’s beddy-by-time early.

There are plenty of other tricks not listed, like good music and a low-calorie snack – I go for pumpkin seeds, jelly beans, cereal. Something I can eat with one hand and keep typing with!

Tell me: Any advice you might offer?

Until next time,

Louisa Bacio << -- Staying up way late to write this blog post.
