How Suspense Ups the Sexual Tension with Tory Richards

If you’re looking for the Valentine’s Day Blogfest & Vampires for Valentine’s Day BlogHop, that’s one post below. But, Tory is offering up prizes, too!

Tory will be awarding a $20 egift certificate to Bath and Body to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour, and the host with the most comments gets a prize, too! So, show me some love!

My host for today has chosen a topic that pretty much defines the plot to The Mercenary Way. Heroine gets kidnapped. Hero rescues her. Bad guys are after them. Plenty of suspense as they make their way through an island jungle toward freedom. Sexual tension develops and grows with each incident that threatens to throw them into danger. So tell me, what’s not thrilling about a sexual encounter right on the edge of something precarious happening?

Suspense adds an extra element that raises the blood pressure, intensifies a situation so that all of your senses become alert, and engaged in that particular development. You might find yourself asking, what if I don’t get a chance to do this again? If I’m not going to be here tomorrow does it really matter if I eat that whole pie today? Get drunk or have the hottest sex I can with that stranger in the elevator? Being in a suspenseful situation where the outcome might be your demise almost compels you into doing or experiencing something you might not otherwise.

I looked up the meaning of suspense in the dictionary. It can mean enjoyable tension, a feeling of tense excitement about how something such as a movie will end. Or, anxiety, a state of intense worry about something. Number one was uncertainty, a condition of being unsure or in doubt about something. The suspense of getting caught in that quickie in the office at work, or in the back seat of a taxi might just be the best sex you’ll ever have. You don’t think, you just do it. What the consequences might be doesn’t enter into the picture.

The intense sex scenes in The Mercenary Way stem from several components. Clint’s number one main objective is to get Sarah off the island alive. Keeping her safe often creates an intimate situation between them that is heightened by the uncertainty of making it home alive. Add that to the strong attraction between them and you have the recipe for some hot, passionate lovin. And not always in a bed.

Excerpt –

His arms came out to catch her, the force of her fall catching him off guard. Suddenly, they were both crashing to the ground. He hit it with a grunt, his body cushioning the fall for her. For the second time that day, Sarah was sprawled on top of him. She began to wiggle like an eel out of water, aware of the intimacy of their situation but she didn’t care.

“Just what the hell are you doing?” Clint’s hands went to her waist as if to push her off. “Stop your damn wiggling,” he groaned.

Sarah ignored the deceptive calm in his voice. Too busy making sure she wasn’t lying in any of the sludge surrounding them, which meant remaining on top of him. She couldn’t help noticing everything about him was as hard as granite.

“I don’t want to get mud on me. Or snakes, or bugs, or anything else equally horrible,” she explained. Did any woman? Surely, he understood that.

“You don’t…” His hard tone was filled with disbelief. “Are you for real? You expect to trek for three days across an island and come out smelling like a rose?” His snort reminded her of an angry bull. “Not likely, angel.” In one swift movement, Clint reversed their positions, putting Sarah on the bottom. “You’re going to get more than a little mud on you.” She cried in outrage but he ignored her, grinding his body into hers. “I want to make sure you’re as covered in mud as I am.”

Clint took hold of both her wrists in one hand, and using his other, grabbed up fistfuls of mud. He ran it beneath her collar and at the opening where her shirt rode up her waist. The more his weight bore her into the ground, the more it filled every nook and cranny. Sarah felt every masculine inch against her.

“Damn you!” Struggling against him was useless. “Get off me!” She arched her body in an effort to throw him off. He thrust against her to keep her in place. “You’ve proven your point, I’m dirty enough!”

“Oh, I don’t know about that.” Clint pinned both her arms on either side of her head, making sure they were flat upon the muddy ground. He smiled down at her like a hungry wolf. “They say mud is good for the skin,” he commented outrageously. “Maybe I should strip you so you can fully benefit from the free spa treatment.”

Sarah could see the white of his teeth. “You do and it will be the last thing you ever do!” She promised, her voice tight. “Short of killing you, there are a number of ways I can think of to get even. Now get off me!”

The Mercenary Way came out Feb 1, 2012 with The Wild Rose Press.

Blurb:

When a ruthless gem smuggler mistakes Sarah for her best friend Susan, she's kidnapped and stashed on an island. Her only hope of rescue is Susan's cousin Clint -- a soldier-of-fortune whose my-way-or-else attitude is as infuriating as his muscular body is distracting.

Clint, ex-Navy SEAL turned mercenary, desperately needs a vacation. Rescuing a kidnapped woman from an island paradise isn't what he had in mind. And when he encounters Sarah's sassy mouth and tempting ways, he soon realizes he's the one in trouble.

About Tory Richards

I'm a fifty-something author who discovered my passion for writing and story telling at the ripe old age of thirteen. Before I received my first manual typewriter, with pencil in hand, I would jot my stories down on notebook paper. Later, after receiving that desired typewriter I spent hours in my bedroom, where my parents thought I was doing homework. Writing turned out to be a kind of therapy for me, something I didn't realize until years later.

I also hold down a full time day job. So basically I'm working all the time. Only writing is a hobby for me, something I do during the quiet of the evenings and on my weekends. My goals are simple and realistic. By the time I retire I'll be happy if I'm just making enough "mad money" from it to be able to travel a little, and spoil my grandchildren.

I'll travel any place a cruise ship will take me. I've been to: Greece, Italy, Croatia, Spain, and Alaska just to name a few places. I don't like to fly, even before I found myself on a plane on 9/11, but I will if I'm given enough legal drugs. I collect antiques and art, and I love chocolate, who doesn't? And I'm addicted to good coffee and sweet ice tea.

For a while life got in the way of my dreams. A few years ago I decided to get serious and haven't looked back!

  8. I love SEAL (or ex SEAL) heroes. I enjoyed Clint showing Sarah a little reality in the excerpt. Can't be prissy when the going gets tough.

  9. Cute excerpt. I hated those old manual typewriters. Woody Allen still uses his old typewriter. But I hated pushing on the keys , my fingers were so sore. Great interview. Deb P

  10. LOL, sorry for the confusion Louisa. Inspiration for Clint? Not really. It just fit the story line. And I tend to write heroes with some kind of dangerous profession.

  11. Yeah, Anne, Clint had to show Sarah who's boss more than once. Usually the hard way:)

  12. You know Renald, if computers hadn't been invented I probably would never have become published. Although, I did like my manual. It was good for letters but too much work for books, and yes, hard on the fingers.
