Reading Nico Rosso's Nights of Steel made me realize how complacent I've become with my choice in material. Rosso's gritty steampunk offers a different, addictive voice. As the fourth book in The Ether Chronicles, I haven't read the others in the series, but it didn't feel like I was missing out.
Instead, the engaging characterization, descriptions and dialogue drew me in. The main characters -- Jack and Anna -- are bounty hunters, used to living on the out edges of the world, and alone. They possess a mutual respect for each other, and the rivalry grows strong. But, when a high-stakes case comes up, they'll need to band together, and perhaps even trust each other.
Rosso does such a good job setting up these characters, that the developing relationship and complications feel authentic.
"They paused to exchange a look before stepping close. A silent communication that they were sharing a room with a bit of an eccentric. But the look was too unguarded, too familiar. The steel returned to Anna's eyes. Jack set his jaw, feeling the familiar smirk he used to shrug troubles away."
Plus, I enjoyed the believable, technical descriptions -- flying motorcycles and mechanical animals -- that infuse the tale with its steampunk flair.
