What can I say? I’m a rescue mom. I won’t buy a dog (well, unless it’s to adopt it from the pound), I make sure as many dogs are spayed and neutered as possible (I’ve gone as far as paying for neighbors and parents at schools, etc), so, of course, I definitely don’t breed. There are simply too many wonderful furbabies in need of homes to add more to the same possible fate.

Owning a dog isn’t, in my eyes, a right or even a purchase. It’s the same as adopting a new child. A member of your family that you love unconditionally no matter what wrongs it does. Would you kick out your child if he chewed up your shoes? Of course not.

Bruiser

I’ve had all manners of rescue dogs over the years I’ve been rescuing. Some chewed shoes, some furniture, some door frames…some even managed to chew through walls. So, my house is a constant state of repair some years and of replacing already purchased items. But, you know what? That’s OK. My non-furry children ruin clothes, write on walls, break toys, ruin shoes….is it really so different?

At one point, I had eleven rescue dogs. Talk about a circus. I did have to part with some, but I found them wonderful homes with proper time and interviews. So, when you pick up that stray and give it to the first person of interest…make sure you’ve adequately checked them out. If they’re offended that you want to visit their home, keep a phone number and address to pop in to visit, then they’re likely not the right home for this pet, or any pet.

Each one of my wonderful family additions has a quirk or quality that makes them unique. Most of them growl at you (not in a mean way, but so you don’t forget they’re there) when you’re eating. I swear they count bites and if you get more than they do, they let you know it’s their turn.

There’s no way I could decide who to talk about today – Bruiser, my old boy who I snuck food to in a neighbor’s yard because they treated him so terrible. The day I got the call to come get him made me so happy. He never looked back when he got in my car. Ares, the poor baby that shouldn’t have even been away from his mama…he’d been dumped in the street and the car turned and was going to run him over. I placed myself in front of that car, and brought him into my home (almost 5 years ago). 

Cleo

Bones, the poor little baby that I got a call about who was half starved and scared of his own shadow. Or Cleo and Chloe, my sister pit bulls who were hated because they’re bullies. Cleo had parvo and after a few thousand dollars, our wonderful vet saved her. Or Sabryna, the Great Dane who’s only 10 months old and still thinks she’s a mini poodle. Her owners couldn’t handle the puppy still in her with her great size and thought it best to try to have her killed. Thankfully, I was called and convinced them to give her to me.

The companionship each has given me and my children have been absolutely astounding. I have Pit Bulls, Boxers and Great Dane and wouldn’t trade one of them in. So, obviously I don’t believe in banning breeds, I believe in banning and putting down stupid people.

On a side note, each quarter, I donate a percent of my book sales to a non-kill dog rescue as well as donate to the ASPCA. So, if you can’t adopt, keep in mind, they’re expensive, they need regular medical checkups just like your children, I ask that you consider donating when you can. Any and all amounts help those people trying to save animals that wouldn’t stand a chance.

Kayla Jameth Offers Pet Tips for Paws With a Cause

Please welcome M/M writer Kayla Jameth to today's Paws With a Cause blog. In addition to her "side" side, Kayla works as a veterinarian, and does she offer some tips for parents of "fur babies." Please give her a warm welcome.

Nabiki is one of those slender, mostly graceful cats that make you think of the statues of Bastet, sans the earring. She is as quirky as her namesake, Tendo Nabiki. She used to sleep on top of my computer monitor for the heat. Now that she has gotten to be 13, she can't get up there any more so she has taken to camping out on my husband's laptop keyboard whenever she can. Not just settling for when he walks off and leaves it unprotected, but also slinking around his hands while he is typing. She is persistence personified in a willowy bundle of white and tiger striped fur.

Since I am a veterinarian, many of my clients are surprised to find I have so few pets. I used to say, "I have a husband, two children, and two cats", but since her sister passed away, she is an only fur child. She has always been one of those cats who think that three is a crowd. Two may have been too many for her as well. She has become much happier and more outgoing now that she no longer considers herself overcrowded.

I thought I would wind this up with a few tips.

I'm sure everyone is aware that chocolate is toxic to pets, but there are other foods to avoid as well. Grapes and raisons can cause kidney failure in some pets so it is best to avoid them. Garlic and onions cause hemolytic anemia by changing the surface of the red blood cell so the body thinks it is foreign and destroys them. Some varieties of avocados are toxic as well.

The xylitol in sugar free gums can be rapidly fatal if not treated quickly. If you brush your pet's teeth, be sure to use tooth paste created for animals. Since pets and young children cannot spit the tooth paste out, they can become toxic on the fluoride.

Sago palms, oleander, and lantana are ornamental plants that are toxic. I would recommend other choices for your flower beds. Easter is approaching and many of the lily varieties are toxic as well.

A couple of first aid tips. If you are cutting your pet's nails and quick one, making it bleed, press the nail into a bar of soap or coat with flour to get the bleeding to stop. If you need an Elizabethan collar (cone) after hours, you can fold a towel and secure it around the neck with tape like a neck brace. This will keep your pet from licking or chewing at a wound or surgical site.

Always have your dog on a leash when out in public. The collar needs to be snug enough that it won't slip over their head. If you can get two fingers under it, it is NOT too tight. Most collars are too loose and pose a serious threat to the pet. You never know when something will scare them and if they slip their collar, they could end up out in traffic. I have seen one puppy lose its life and another dog lose its eye in that fashion.

Cats need to be in carriers. No matter how nice your cat is, you cannot control it if it is scared enough. I can't tell you how many times we have chased cats that escaped their owner's arms in the parking lot. We didn't get all of them back.

And finally, you should always know where your closest after hours emergency clinic is, just in case. The last thing you want to do is have to search for one in an emergency situation.

Henri led him toward the gazebo. Soon he would find out.

The cool breeze caressed his uncovered neck. Cinder shivered at the ethereal touch. Henri turned to him, the question clear in his eyes, but he didn’t know how to answer. Instead he breathed in the tangible scent of rich earth and flowing water, hoping to calm his bounding heart.

They left the last of the courtiers behind as they entered the dim interior of the fanciful pavilion.  Vines climbed its intricately carved posts, perfuming the air within. Bespelled and bemused, he could feel the magic in every beat of his heart, in every trembling breath he drew.

Once inside the bower, Henri reached to cup Cinder's cheek. Unused to being touched, he nearly flinched away but managed to still, heart pounding, before giving himself away. The older man's thumb slid across his cheekbone and came to rest lightly on his mouth. Why did he want to lean into that caress?

The other man's warm, slightly musky scent filled his nostrils, drowning his senses.

Henri's other hand wrapped around his waist and drew him close. He leaned closer while tipping Cinder's face upwards. Cinder's breath left him in a rush, stirring the noble’s hair. Henri was all that he could see, his mouth slowly, carefully descending toward Cinder’s. If he allowed this, the other man might discover his deception. Surprisingly, Henri's mouth was soft and warm upon his own. After a moment, it pressed more firmly against his. Something fluttered in his chest, trying to get out.

Cinder didn't think to pull away until he felt Henri's tongue seeking entrance. The hand on his face slipped to his nape and held firm. He froze in shock, not even daring to breathe, as flames rushed through his body. The very beat of his heart betrayed him.

The questing tongue stroked his lips and pushed between them. It slid over his teeth, seeking to enter. When he protested, Henri swept in and began a lazy, sensuous exploration that left him breathless.

Soon he found himself returning the caress. Henri responded to his fledgling attempts by pulling him closer and moaning into his mouth. He had never experienced anything so sensual and erotic. He fed his own needy pleas to the other man one at a time.

When my husband and I were engaged, we decided to get a dog from the rescue shelter. We decided on an adult dog, already housetrained, well behaved, with a mellow personality. We met a few dogs at the shelter but didn't click. The manager told us a new litter of puppies had just come in, and did we want to take a look? We agreed, though we were doubtful. They placed the runt of the litter in my arms. She was part hound dog, part shepherd, with a beautiful face and a nervous tick. She shook violently as I held her, overcome with nerves, and proceeded to vomit all over my shoulder.

I told my husband we had found the one.

We named her Bella and she became the bane of our existence. She made Marley look like he'd graduated with honors from dog school. She was a bit more manipulative than Marley though. When we took her to dog training, she immediately fell into line and the teacher adored her, calling her brilliant. As soon as we got her home, she laughed in our faces and peed right on the carpet in punishment for making her go through doggie school. She graduated technically, but failed literally.

Bella is nine years old now. She still chews and steals the kids' stuffed animals. Punishes us when we go away and need to board her. Steals food, raids the garbage, chews tissues, wrecks pillows, and proceeds with her life like she's still a toddler.

But we love her, and she was our first child. My husband and I say all the time when she slows down, we'll be devastated, because this little flame of life has given us excitement, drama, chaos, and tons and tons of love.

I wish all of you the same with your rescue dogs!

Who's Nicolai?

I made the rounds of cages in the no kill shelter, peering into each one. So many dogs looking for a home. I could tell the ones that had been there the longest. They’d run to the front of the cage as I walked by, begging for a treat from the dispenser outside their cage. They didn’t care about me, only the treats. They knew the drill. Why get your hopes up?

I’d feed one or two, looking for something, I don’t know, something in their eyes, something to tell me ‘this is my dog.’ As I’d move on, the dogs would go back to what they’d been doing— grooming themselves, napping, whatever dogs do.

 As I made my way down the last row I began to wonder if I’d find ‘the one’. And then I saw him. His name was Ralph. He came to the front of the cage, but instead of waiting for a treat, he turned his body to be petted. He didn’t care about the treat. All he cared about was getting some attention. And he was beautiful. By far the most handsome of all the dogs there that day.

As I rose from petting him, I saw another family point to his cage. They wanted to meet him. I watched as the shelter worker took Ralph out on a leash to meet them. They had a little girl, about five or six. Ralph jumped around, waging his tail and knocking into the girl. He was a big dog and she was afraid. I wanted to be ashamed for being glad, but I wasn’t. I wanted him. He was my dog.

After a while the shelter worker moved to put Ralph back in his cage. I stopped him and asked if the family had wanted Ralph. He told me no that he was too rambunctious for them. I asked if I could walk Ralph and the worker gave me the leash. There were so many people and other dogs around so Ralph jumped and bounced, never still. I steered him to a quiet corner. After a while he calmed down. I bent down and looked into his eyes and I just knew. He was the one.

His name is Nicolai now and he’s the best dog… mostly. He still jumps around when he meets new people, but he’s good with kids and follows me like a shadow. I can’t imagine our lives without him.

We have a total of 59 blogs that have gotten together to help raise money for a great cause. There are going to be some awesome prizes up for grabs for people that donate money to the cause. Here is a little about the company that we are raising the money for:

Paws With A Cause® enhances the independence and quality of life for people with disabilities nationally through custom-trained Assistance Dogs. PAWS® increases awareness of the rights and roles of Assistance Dog teams through education and advocacy.  Founded in 1979, Paws With A Cause is dedicated to helping its clients who are challenged by many disabilities, such as Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Seizure Disorders, and Hearing Disorders to name just some.  Each of our dogs are trained to meet the specific needs of our clients. Tasks may include opening and closing doors, picking up objects, pulling a wheelchair, turning lights on and off, and alerting a person to particular sounds like a telephone, doorbell, smoke detector and many others. Our dogs change lives by enhancing the independence of our clients. By just opening a door, a dog opens up the world for a person with a disability and your donations will go to making that happen.  PAWS thanks you so much for your donation and allowing us to open more doors.

How to donate:

1. Go to https://www.everribbon.com/PawswithaCause

2. Click on "Make a Donation"

3. Enter an amount you wish to donate. Everibbon will add a small fee to your donation for processing. My fee for donating $5.00 was .49 cents. So keep this in mind when deciding your donation amount. You will receive 1 entry into the giveaway for every $1 you donate. 

4. In the box that says "on the behalf of" please put your name. This is the name that will be listed on the Everibbon website so put a name you do not mind being visible to everyone. Do not check the box to make an anonymous donation because I will not be able to track your donation to enter you into the giveaways.

5. Next it will ask you for your credit or debit card information.

6. Then it will ask for your email address to send you a receipt. This is so that you can submit it for tax purposes.

7. Ta Da! Your all done making your donation. Now you need to contact Danielle to enter the giveaway.

8. Please email Danielle at RomanceBookJunkiesDanielle@Yahoo.com with the name you used to donate your money. For example the name I used to donate on behalf of was Romance Book Junkies. Do not send me your name off your credit or debit card because I will not be able to see this. Along with the name you used please tell me how much you donated and if you live in the U.S. or are International.

9. You’re all done. Thank you for donating!

Warning: Do not try to email Danielle the name and donation amount of another person that is not yourself. If Danielle receives more than one email with the same person’s name and donation amount she will have to ask for your copy of the receipt from everibbon to verify that you are the correct winner.
