Blueberry-Ginger
Simple Syrup
(Adapted from Better Homes & Gardens’ recipe for
Blackberry-Ginger Simple Syrup since we had blueberries in the fridge).
With a tree full of lemons, there is no
more-refreshing drink than lemonade in the summer. Or is there? You can easily
make some simple syrups to add zest and color! Yesterday, we made
Blueberry-Ginger, but think about strawberries! Oh, yum.
As soon as I asked my 8-year-old to juice
some lemons, she asked, “Are we going to have a lemonade stand?” Let me tell
you, we’d probably sell a lot of this variety.
Here’s the
recipe:
In a small
saucepan, combine 1 ½ cups water, 1 cup sugar, ½ cup berries and 1 tablespoon
ginger (I diced, but not finely). Bring to boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar
and to slightly mash berries; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, 10 minutes. Let
cool; strain. Store in fridge up to one month.
For the drink,
we juiced fresh Meyer lemons (it’s our tree, so sweeter than regular …).
Mixed ½ cup of
lemon juice with ½ cup of syrup, filled the rest of our pitcher with cold
water.
The BH&G recipe
mixed it with ice tea, so its suggestions are the syrup, 4 cups of ice tea, 1 ½
cups of soda water, ½ cup of lemon juice.
